1. Braveheart

Undeniably, Braveheart is the greatest masterpiece of this fantastic actor with captivating blue eyes. In 1995, Mel Gibson embodied the legendary Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace, who led his people into the First War of Independence against King Edward I of England in the 13th century. In this film he not only played the leading role, but also acted as director and co-producer. The response was overwhelming! Even today, many critics and especially viewers praise this blockbuster for its outstanding cinematography, exciting script, wonderful soundtrack and perfect actors.

3. Payback

The movie Payback is a bit younger than the two works mentioned above. Mel Gibson shot it in 1999, at the peak of his gigantic career. At that time, the actor mainly starred in action movies, and this work is one of them. The plot is based on the novel of the same name by Richard Stark, which he wrote under the pseudonym Donald E. Westlake. Gibson embodies a professional robber who, together with his wife Lynn and his partner Val Resnick, robs $140,000 from Chinese money launderers. Afterward, the leading man finds out that his accomplices conspired against him and used him to pull off the heist. What follows is a cold revenge worthy of the name Payback.

4 The Patriot

The Patriot dates back to 2000, and this time we are dealing with a historical piece again, but with strong action parts. The action takes place in the 18th century during the American War of Independence. It was directed by master director Roland Emmerich, Gibson took the lead role and played the veteran Benjamin Martin. The latter has to take care of seven children alone after the death of his wife. His son is killed and he decides to go to war. The script is roughly based on the life of Francis Marion, a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army who later became a brigadier general with the South Carolina Militia. Before his soldiering career, Marion was a simple sailor.

5 Lethal Weapon

Let’s turn back time a bit, to 1987, the year when the blockbuster Lethal Weapon hit theaters, and Mel Gibson first portrayed Officer Riggs, the former Navy SEAL who now works for the Los Angeles Police Department. This started an avalanche that led to three more Lethal Weapon movies: Action and suspense were so perfectly dosed that the audience could hardly get enough of it! But many fans are still of the opinion that number 1 is still the best part, as is so often the case when a really good film becomes a series. But the second part from 1989 also has enormous strengths. Part 3 and 4 were the 1992 and 1998, then Lethal Weapon had an end.

6 Gallipoli

If we’re going to go back to Lethal Weapon, we might as well turn the clock a bit further, to 1981, when Gallipoli was shot. It is a historical film that Gibson added his acting skills to at the beginning of his great career. In it, two Australian short distance runners are drafted to serve in World War I. Gibson plays Frank Dunne, an unemployed ex-railroad man who has gone bankrupt and therefore joins the army. The film received overwhelmingly positive reviews and was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Foreign (Australian) Film.
